Indian Railways boosts digital payments and online services
To enhance Singapore’s future communication and connectivity capabilities and talents, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has partnered with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), one of the leading universities for scientific research in the field of telecommunications.
In anticipation of the future of 6G in Singapore, Minister of Communications and Information Josephine Teo has launched SUTD’s Future Communications Connectivity (FCC) Lab, the region’s first physical 6G lab, which will also attempt to bring together 6G R&D and the AI mega center of SUTD.
“SUTD is pleased to partner with IMDA, to advance industry research and education institutions for talent development in Singapore’s wireless communications ecosystem. We look forward to accelerating the application of research into future communication technologies,” said Professor Chong Tow Chong, President of SUTD.
FCCLab will seek to spark breakthroughs in 6G research and support the development of technologies such as holographic communications and advanced sensing capabilities to enable the next generation of autonomous cars and drones.
According to Lew Chuen Hong, General Manager of IMDA, breakthroughs would not be possible without constant investment and focus on the next frontier. They are excited to collaborate with SUTD to establish Southeast Asia’s first 6G lab.
This is the start of their efforts to capitalize on the promise of future communication technologies and become a global center of excellence.
The FCCLab is part of the S$70 million Future Communications Research and Development Program and is located at the SUTD Campus (FCP). The National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF) funds the FCP under its Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (RIE) initiatives, with SUTD serving as the host institution.
FCP will coordinate various research efforts in the RIE ecosystem, with Research Institutes (RIs), Institutes of Higher Education (IHLs), and other RIE efforts.
FCCLab Testbed will adhere to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP1) and Open RAN standards to facilitate direct evaluation of research results. Individually replaceable network components allow for personalized study.
SUTD, as the host university, will lead collaborations in the Singapore ecosystem, including A*STAR, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Institute of Singapore Technology (SIT).
SUTD has currently awarded 20 FCP grant projects for research and translation. Research projects are focused on multi-access edge computing, network orchestration, non-terrestrial networks and security, while translation projects are use-case focused and have a thematic focus on new mobility capabilities for air, land and sea applications.
FCP has also provided 14 Masters level scholarships for local students to pursue research and translations in future communication technologies to boost the Singaporean talent pool.
Singapore has already entered into 6G agreements with leading 6G institutes around the world, including Finland’s 6G flagship and the Korea Institute of Communications and Information Science. SUTD also collaborates with local and multinational companies under the FCP program.
Moreover, 5G communication networks are supposed to be the backbone of digital transformation and enable all industries to make huge technological changes.
5G is expected to deliver enhanced mobile broadband and mission-critical Internet of Things (IoT), bringing the Internet of Everything, Everywhere. During the implementation of 5G, it is crucial to consider the gaps left by 5G and start developing 6G technologies to fill them.
It’s a good start to look at some of the unmet demands of 5G and to consider the needs of 6G technology.
