Chennai Corporation to launch new online services
The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to introduce new online services including correcting birth and death details, booking community halls and obtaining information under the RTI Act and to streamline the existing service provision for residents.
According to Companies Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, the initiatives were part of the state government’s plans to deliver essential services to citizens at their doorsteps through online applications. “Good practices in other places will be sought out to be emulated in Chennai,” Mr Bedi said.
In a series of meetings held to improve resident services, officials identified about 16 services that could be offered online.
Geetha Ganesh, Secretary of AGS Colony RWA Velachery West, said that the list of online services available, in addition to being available on the GCC website, should be posted on a board in front of all GCC offices and placed regularly updated on the website, with the stipulated time, eligibility criteria, fee amount, application procedure, do’s and don’ts in the application, responsible persons and date of approval of admitted applications, the time allowed for the approval of any service, and in case of delay by the authorities, the reason for the delay must be clearly mentioned.
According to available data, in 2020-2021, about 38.35 lakh residents used the existing birth certificate services to download the certificate online from various parts of the world. Residents born in Chennai and having worked abroad have used many of these online services. But they had been unable to get online services for the correction of birth certificate details.
The Company has integrated existing online birth and death certificate services with portals such as Aadhaar and e-Sanad. The latter provides a centralized platform for paperless document verification service for Indian citizens and foreigners who have obtained documents from Indian authorities. The e-Sanad project is implemented in a phased manner, ensuring that foreign employers and other verification agencies obtain authentic documents digitally verified.
Certain services, including the issuance of birth and death certificates, are provided free of charge by the Company.
No less than 5,696 applications for corporate tax assessment in Chennai were processed by the civic body in 2020-2021 and incorporated into the Guidance Office One-Stop Portal and State One-Stop Portal of Tamil Nadu, the officials said.
A total of 53,381 business license services were provided in 2020-2021 in Chennai. At least 12,803 building permit applications were processed in 2020-2021.
