343 Industries to officially end online services for Xbox 360 Halo games in January
Halo fans had a pretty exciting day with 343 Industries presenting the first look at campaign gameplay for Halo: infinite since the reveal of the original gameplay in July 2020. This was good news, as the studio also confirmed that the servers for all Xbox 360s Halo the titles would close in the coming months.
This is not entirely new information, as 343 initially announced the shutdown of the online service on Halo Waypoint last December, but there has been a slight change in dates as we approach the launch of Infinite.
In that first post, 343 noted that month-to-month usage of older Xbox 360 games was steadily declining, resulting in a “greater imbalance between the time and labor required to maintain versus the net impact. overall Halo community. ”As a result, the team has announced plans to phase out legacy online services for 360 titles in December 2021, although that date has been pushed back to January 13, 2022.
Phases one and two of this phased approach to removing old servers have already been completed, as 343 moved a lot of data from 360 games to support. The Master Chief collection in the fall of 2019 and a notification of this plan, as well as the end of digital sales for Halo 360 titles took place last December.
The following games will still be fully playable, but will have limited or fully disabled online services on January 13, 2022:
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Scope of the halo
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- Halo wars
- Halo: Spartan assault.
This applies to the original 360 Halo titles only, which also means backward compatible titles on Xbox One or Xbox Series X / S will also be limited or disabled online. It will not affect CM versions or updates to versions of these titles.
“To date, we have juggled forward-looking work and priorities with the ongoing upkeep of Halo Xbox 360 Legacy Services ”, 343 noted. “Maintaining these legacy services today requires a lot of time and resources, which has a direct impact on the studio’s ability to support current and future projects like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Infinite halo. Each cycle spent maintaining and supporting Xbox 360 legacy services represents time and energy not devoted to the future of Halo. “
